A New Chapter: Know Your Company

Written by Claire Lew

Today, I'm excited to announce that I'll be running Know Your Company
as the CEO.

Know Your Company is a software tool built by 37signals, the Chicago-based tech company that makes Basecamp and created Rails.

The Story of How It Started

Earlier this year, the co-founder & CEO of 37signals, Jason Fried, felt that he wasn’t in touch with his employes anymore. The company had grown to 38 employees across the world, and it was becoming harder to stay current on how everyone felt about the company. So Jason assembled a small internal team to create a solution.

This is how I met Jason. My friend Neal introduced us, knowing what each of us was working on. I had recently left my full-time job, committed to solving this very problem of feedback in the workplace...just as Jason had started prototyping a software solution.

It all clicked. Jason hired me for my consulting services to interview everyone at 37signals and uncover in-depth insights about the company (they were my first official ClarityBox client). At one point, he also wanted me to run Know Your Company as a product owner. It didn’t end up coming together at the time, but it’s funny how things come back full circle…

A Successful Product With Real Potential

37signals launched Know Your Company as a product this past summer. Since then, it has almost 100 customers and made close to $400,000 in less than six months. The product has made a real difference to a lot of companies in a short amount of time. And this is all with almost no marketing.

Know Your Company has been such a successful product that Jason decided to spin it off into a standalone business. He felt that with more energy behind it, Know Your Company could really take off. So about a month ago, Jason approached me about running it. You can read Jason’s own words on it here.

The Perfect Fit

It couldn’t be a more perfect fit. Since quitting my job a year ago, my sole mission has been to help people become happier at work. Now, I get to do that with software, and impact even more people in a faster way.

I’ll be placing ClarityBox as a consulting service to the side for now, so I can focus on delivering the product. But in the future, I could envision both the service and product being offered together.

It’s an unbelievable, humbling opportunity – and I’m very grateful to Jason and the rest of the 37signals team for it.

Most of all, I want to thank my family and friends. They've been in my corner from Day 1, and they are the only reason I had the courage to embark on this journey in the first place.

Now there’s a new chapter to the journey. I’m excited to roll up my sleeves, and help more people get to know their company better.

With love,

Claire Lew
